What to Look for in Roof Installation Quality in Louisville

How to Evaluate Roof Installation Quality

The shingles on your roof are only as good as the crew that installs them. Here's what quality installation looks like — and what corners look like when contractors cut them.

During Installation: What to Watch For

    1. Proper Tear-Off

Quality starts with a clean substrate. The crew should remove all existing shingles down to the bare decking. Any rotted plywood should be replaced with matching-thickness OSB or plywood.

Red flag: If they're nailing new shingles over bumpy, uneven surfaces from old shingles left underneath.

    2. Underlayment Installation

Synthetic underlayment should cover the entire roof deck with proper overlap (typically 6 inches). Ice and water shield should be installed:

    • At all eaves (minimum 24 inches past the exterior wall)
    • In all valleys
    • Around all penetrations (pipes, vents, chimneys, skylights)
    • At any area prone to ice damming

Red flag: Skipping ice and water shield in valleys to save money.

    3. Proper Nail Placement

Each shingle has a specific "nail line" — a zone where nails must be placed to engage both the shingle being nailed and the shingle below it. High nailing (placing nails above this zone) is the #1 installation defect that voids manufacturer warranties.

Red flag: You can't easily see nail placement from the ground, but a certified inspector can verify it.

    4. Straight, Consistent Lines

Shingle courses should be straight and evenly spaced. Crooked lines aren't just ugly — they indicate sloppy workmanship that likely extends to less visible areas.

    5. Proper Flashing

Every point where the roof meets a wall, chimney, vent, or another roof section needs flashing — metal pieces that channel water away from vulnerable joints. Step flashing along walls should be woven with each shingle course, not simply laid flat underneath.

Red flag: Using caulk or roofing cement instead of proper metal flashing.

    After Installation: What to Inspect

    1. Ridge Cap

The ridge cap (the shingles along the peak of your roof) should be straight, evenly overlapping, and sealed. The ridge vent beneath should be continuous and properly nailed.

    2. Clean Valleys

Valleys should be clean, with shingles cut in a straight line and no exposed nail heads. Open valleys (with visible metal) should have the metal properly overlapped and sealed.

    3. Sealed Penetrations

Every pipe, vent, and chimney should have a new boot or flashing that's properly sealed. Pipe boots should be rubber or lead — not just caulked.

    4. Drip Edge

Metal drip edge should be installed along all eaves and rakes (the sloped edges of your roof). This seemingly small detail prevents water from wicking back under the shingles and rotting the fascia.

    5. Clean Gutters and Property

A quality crew cleans gutters of debris, runs a magnetic nail sweeper across your yard and driveway, and leaves your property cleaner than they found it.
