What to Expect When Your Louisville Roof Is Being Replaced
Your Roof Replacement Day: An Hour-by-Hour Guide
Knowing what to expect takes the stress out of roof replacement day. Here's a typical timeline for a Louisville residential project.
Before the Crew Arrives
Material Delivery (Usually the Day Before)
Shingle bundles, underlayment, and accessories are delivered and staged in your driveway or on the roof. Each bundle weighs about 60–80 pounds, and a typical roof needs 60–100 bundles, so this is a significant delivery.
Day 1: Tear-Off and Installation
7:00–7:30 AM: Setup
- Crew arrives and parks in the street (keeping your driveway clear for the dumpster)
- Dumpster is positioned (if not placed the day before)
- Tarps are laid over landscaping, decks, and walkways
- Plywood protection goes under ladder points
- Safety equipment is set up
7:30–10:00 AM: Tear-Off
This is the loudest part. The crew uses shovels and pry bars to remove existing shingles, felt paper, and old flashing. Debris slides down the roof into the dumpster or onto tarps below.
You'll hear: scraping, banging, materials hitting the dumpster, shouting between crew members. It sounds intense, but it's normal.
10:00–11:00 AM: Deck Inspection and Repair
With the deck exposed, the crew inspects every inch for soft spots, rot, water damage, or structural issues. Damaged sheets are cut out and replaced with new plywood.
This is when we may call you to discuss additional decking costs if significant damage is found.
11:00 AM–12:00 PM: Underlayment and Ice Shield
Ice and water shield goes on first — at eaves, in valleys, and around penetrations. Then synthetic underlayment covers the entire remaining deck surface.
12:00–12:30 PM: Lunch Break
The crew takes a 30-minute break. Your roof is waterproof at this point thanks to the underlayment.
12:30–5:00 PM: Shingle Installation
This is the main event. Shingles go on from the bottom up, course by course. The crew uses pneumatic nail guns, which produce a steady rhythm of compressed-air shots.
On a typical Louisville home (22–28 squares), the crew can complete 60–75% of shingle installation on day one.
5:00–5:30 PM: Daily Cleanup
The crew cleans up loose debris, organizes the worksite, and secures materials for the night.
Day 2 (If Needed)
Morning: Complete Shingling
Remaining courses, ridge cap, and detail work (around chimneys, vents, walls).
Afternoon: Final Details and Cleanup
- Pipe boots and vent flashing
- Ridge vent and ridge cap installation
- Thorough ground cleanup
- Magnetic nail sweep (multiple passes)
- Gutter cleaning
- Tarp removal
Walk-Through
The project manager walks the property with you, pointing out the completed work and answering any questions. This is your chance to flag any concerns before final payment.
Your Role During the Project
Mostly: stay out of the way and let the crew work. But:
- Keep your phone handy for communication from the project manager
- Keep kids and pets inside and away from the work zone
- Check in at the end of each day if you want a progress update
- Do the final walk-through — don't skip it
