Your Roof Replacement Preparation Checklist
A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth roof replacement. Here's what to do before the crew arrives.
Outside Your Home
Vehicles
- Move all vehicles out of the driveway and away from the house
- Park across the street or in the garage if possible
- The crew needs driveway space for the dumpster and material delivery
Yard and Landscaping
- Remove patio furniture, grills, and decorations from around the house perimeter
- Move potted plants away from the house
- Note any fragile landscaping to the project manager — we'll tarp and protect it
- Trim back tree branches that overhang the roof if possible
Outdoor Items
- Remove or secure any wall-mounted items (lights, decorations, bird feeders)
- Take down satellite dishes if they're on the roof (coordinate with your provider)
- Remove trampoline, play equipment, or anything within 15 feet of the house
Access
- Ensure the crew can access all sides of the house
- Unlock gates and clear fence access points
- Remove anything blocking the path from the driveway to the back of the house
Inside Your Home
Attic
- Cover stored items in the attic with sheets or tarps — dust and small debris will fall during tear-off
- If your attic has fragile items, consider moving them temporarily
Walls and Shelves
- Take down framed photos and mirrors on upper-floor walls — vibration from hammering can knock items loose
- Secure shelved items on upper floors
Electronics
- Cover electronics in upper-floor rooms if you're concerned about dust
- The hammering vibration is loud but shouldn't cause any structural issues
Pets
- Keep dogs inside or at a friend's house — loose nails, debris, and strangers with loud tools are dangerous for pets
- Cats should stay indoors — the noise and activity will stress them
- If you have outdoor pets (chickens, etc.), let the crew know their location
Communication
With Your Contractor
- Confirm the start date 2–3 days in advance
- Discuss material delivery — when and where it will arrive
- Provide your cell phone number for day-of communication
- Ask about the daily start time (usually 7:30–8:00 AM)
With Your Neighbors
- Give adjacent neighbors a heads-up about the project dates
- Let them know about potential noise, dumpster placement, and crew vehicles
- A friendly heads-up prevents complaints and maintains good relationships
With Your Work/Family
- If you work from home, plan for significant noise during tear-off (typically the first half of day one)
- Arrange childcare or activities for young children who may be frightened by the noise
- Consider working from a coffee shop on tear-off day if noise is a concern
Day Of: What to Expect
- Crew arrives by 7:30–8:00 AM
- Dumpster is positioned (usually in the driveway)
- Tarps placed over landscaping and ground areas
- Tear-off begins — this is the noisiest part
- Materials go up — new underlayment, then shingles
- Cleanup happens continuously and thoroughly at the end
- Magnetic nail sweep of entire property
- Walk-through with you to review the finished product
