How to Get References from Your Louisville Roofer (and What to Ask)

    Why References Still Matter

Online reviews are valuable, but references let you ask specific questions and hear detailed experiences from past customers. Here's how to use them effectively.

    How to Request References

Simply ask: "Can you provide 3–5 references from recent Louisville projects?" A legitimate contractor will have these ready. If they hesitate or claim they can't share customer information, that's a red flag.

    Ideal references are:

    • Projects completed within the last 12 months
    • Similar in scope to your project (replacement vs. repair)
    • Homes in your area (Louisville/Southern Indiana)
    • A mix of types — not just the contractor's friends

    Questions to Ask References

    About the Process

    1. "How was the communication before, during, and after the project?"
    2. "Did the crew show up on time? Were they professional?"
    3. "Were there any surprises during the project? How were they handled?"
    4. "How long did the project take? Was it on schedule?"

    About Quality

    1. "Are you satisfied with how the roof looks?"
    2. "Have you had any issues since installation (leaks, loose shingles, etc.)?"
    3. "Did they do a thorough cleanup? Did you find nails in your yard?"

    About Value

    1. "Was the final price the same as the estimate?"
    2. "Were there any unexpected charges?"
    3. "Would you hire them again?"

    The Most Important Question

    1. "If something went wrong after the project, how did the contractor handle it?"

This is the real test. Every project can have issues — what matters is how the contractor responds.

    Beyond Phone References: Visual Verification

Ask to see completed projects in person. A proud contractor will happily point you to recent roofs in Louisville neighborhoods where you can drive by and see the quality of their work.
