How Should a Professional Roof Installation Look in Louisville?

Visual Standards for a Quality Roof Installation

After your roof replacement is complete, here's what quality workmanship looks like — and what sloppy work looks like.

    Shingle Courses: Straight and Even

Quality: From the ground, shingle courses should appear ruler-straight with perfectly consistent exposure (the visible portion of each shingle). The pattern should be uniform from eave to ridge.

Sloppy: Wavy lines, inconsistent exposure, visible steps between courses. If you can see unevenness from your driveway, the crew was rushing.

    Ridge Cap: Clean and Aligned

Quality: The ridge cap (peak of the roof) should be straight, with each cap shingle evenly overlapping the previous one. No exposed nail heads.

Sloppy: Crooked ridge cap, uneven overlaps, visible nails, gaps between cap shingles.

    Valleys: Precise Cuts

Quality: In open valleys, the shingle cut line should be perfectly straight with consistent width. In closed/woven valleys, shingles should weave evenly with no exposed nail heads in the valley center.

Sloppy: Irregular cut lines, exposed nails, shingles cut too short or overlapping unevenly.

    Flashing: Tight and Sealed

Quality: Flashing around chimneys, walls, and vents should be tight against the surface with no visible gaps. Step flashing should follow a stair-step pattern woven with each shingle course.

Sloppy: Gaps between flashing and surfaces, bent or kinked metal, caulk used as a substitute for proper flashing installation.

    Pipe Boots: New and Clean

Quality: Every pipe penetration should have a new rubber or lead boot that sits flush against the shingles. The boot collar should be snug around the pipe.

Sloppy: Old, cracked boots reused from the previous roof. Boots that don't sit flat. Excessive caulk around the base.

    Drip Edge: Present and Straight

Quality: Metal drip edge should be visible along all eaves and rakes, installed beneath the underlayment at the eaves and over the underlayment at the rakes.

Sloppy: Missing drip edge entirely (a code violation in many areas), crooked installation, gaps between drip edge sections.

    Cleanup: Spotless Property

Quality: No debris on the roof, in gutters, or on the ground. No nails in the yard, driveway, or flower beds. Landscaping looks the same as before the project. Dumpster is removed promptly.

Sloppy: Shingle fragments in gutters, nails on the driveway (you'll find them with your tires), crushed plants, debris left on the roof.

    The Walk-Through

Always do a final walk-through with your project manager. Look at the roof from multiple angles. Check the ground for debris. Inspect visible flashing and pipe boots. If anything doesn't look right, say so before making final payment.
