What to Tell Your Insurance Adjuster About Roof Damage in Louisville

    Communicating With Your Insurance Adjuster

The adjuster meeting is the most important moment in your roof insurance claim. What you say and show during this visit directly impacts how much your claim is worth.

    Before the Adjuster Arrives

    1. Document Everything First

    • Photograph all visible damage from the ground (roof, gutters, siding, vents)
    • Take photos of interior damage (ceiling stains, attic water marks)
    • Note the exact date and time of the storm
    • Save any weather alerts or severe weather warnings for your area

    2. Get Your Own Inspection

Have a reputable roofing contractor inspect your roof before the adjuster comes. This gives you a professional damage assessment to compare against the adjuster's findings.

    3. Have Your Contractor Present

This is critical. At Homestretch, Mike Nielsen personally attends every adjuster meeting. He walks the roof with the adjuster and ensures every area of damage is identified. Most adjusters appreciate having a knowledgeable contractor present.

    During the Adjuster Visit

    What to Say

    Be factual and specific:

    • "The storm came through on [specific date] at approximately [time]."
    • "I noticed [specific damage — missing shingles, dented gutters, etc.] the morning after."
    • "My roofing contractor identified [number] areas of damage during their inspection."
    • "Here are photos I took on the day of the storm."

    Be cooperative but informed:

    • "I'd like to be present during the roof inspection."
    • "Can you walk me through what you're finding on each roof plane?"
    • "My contractor noted damage in [specific area] — I want to make sure that's included."

    What NOT to Say

    • Don't exaggerate or speculate about the cause of damage
    • Don't admit to pre-existing conditions unless asked directly
    • Don't agree to a dollar amount on the spot — wait for the written estimate
    • Don't sign anything besides the proof-of-loss when ready
    • Don't discuss your deductible with the contractor present (adjusters note this)

    What to Show the Adjuster

    1. Your storm documentation photos from the day of the event
    2. Your contractor's inspection report with photos
    3. Ground-level evidence — dented gutters, damaged siding, damaged outdoor items
    4. Interior evidence — ceiling stains, attic water marks, wet insulation
    5. Neighbor context — if neighbors have filed claims or gotten new roofs, mention it

    After the Adjuster Visit

    1. Request a copy of the adjuster's report and scope of loss
    2. Compare it to your contractor's assessment line by line
    3. File a supplement for any damage the adjuster missed
    4. Don't start work until you've reviewed and agreed to the claim amount

    The Supplement Process

If the adjuster's estimate is lower than the actual cost of repairs, your contractor files a "supplement" — additional documentation requesting coverage for items that were missed or underpriced. This is completely standard and is not adversarial. At Homestretch, we handle the entire supplement process for you.
