Post-Replacement Roof Care: What Louisville Homeowners Should Do
Taking Care of Your New Roof
Congratulations on your new roof! Here's what to know and do to protect your investment for the next 25+ years.
The First Week
Expect Some Granule Loss
Brand-new shingles will shed some excess granules during the first few rainstorms. This is completely normal — manufacturers apply extra granules during production, and the loose ones wash off. You'll see granules in your gutters and at the bottom of downspouts. This should decrease significantly after 2–3 rain events.
Shingle Sealing
New shingles have adhesive strips that seal each shingle to the one below it. This sealing process requires heat and time — typically 2–4 weeks of warm, sunny weather. Until the seals fully activate, shingles may appear slightly lifted at the edges. This is normal.
If your roof was installed in fall or winter, complete sealing may not occur until the following spring.
Check for Debris
Walk your property and check for any leftover nails, shingle fragments, or packaging materials. A good crew will have done a thorough cleanup, but it doesn't hurt to double-check.
The First Month
Register Your Warranty
If your contractor hasn't already done it, make sure your manufacturer warranty is registered. Most manufacturers require registration within 30–60 days of installation for full warranty coverage. At Homestretch, we handle this for you.
Save Your Documents
Keep these in a safe place:
- Contractor's proposal/contract
- Warranty certificates (both manufacturer and workmanship)
- Building permit with final inspection sign-off
- Photos of the completed project
- Material specifications (brand, product, color)
Insurance Notification
Contact your insurance company to report the new roof. You may qualify for a premium reduction — especially if you installed impact-resistant shingles.
The First Year
Schedule a Follow-Up Inspection
Ask your contractor for a one-year follow-up inspection. This catches any installation issues while they're still covered under the workmanship warranty. Homestretch provides complimentary one-year inspections for all our customers.
Monitor After Storms
After any significant storm (hail, high wind, heavy rain), do a visual check from the ground. If you see anything concerning — missing shingles, loose flashing, displaced ridge cap — call your contractor.
Ongoing Maintenance
Annually
- Clean gutters (spring and fall)
- Visual inspection from the ground
- Check attic for water stains or moisture
- Trim trees to maintain 6-foot clearance
Every 3–5 Years
- Professional inspection
- Check pipe boots and sealants (they deteriorate faster than shingles)
- Assess ventilation adequacy
Avoid
- Walking on your roof unnecessarily
- Power washing
- Mounting satellite dishes or antennas without professional help
- Storing items against the roof (ladders, lumber)
The Bottom Line
A new roof is a low-maintenance asset — but it's not a no-maintenance one. Small, consistent attention protects your investment and ensures your roof reaches its full lifespan.
